Ultimate 4 Day Cappadocia Travel Itinerary

Introduction
Welcome to the magical land of Cappadocia, Turkey! A landscape that feels more like Mars than Earth, with fairy chimneys and ancient cave dwellings. This itinerary is designed for those who seek adventure, cultural immersion, and a touch of magic. Whether you're here for the Instagrammable spots or to delve into history, Cappadocia promises an unforgettable journey.

Accommodation

A week before us, another digital nomad couple recommended this beautiful hotel. The owners are a British and Turkish couple, and Lee, one of the owners, was super sweet. She made us feel at home. The location is perfect, and you get to sleep in the caves! I highly recommend it!

Day 1: The Fairy Chimneys and Open-Air Museums

Morning

Hot Air Balloon Ride—Start your adventure with a sunrise hot air balloon ride. Float over the captivating landscape and watch the sun bathe the region in warm hues.

  • Things to know before your trip

    • Bring a jacket, as you will wait in the shuttle until the hot air balloons are ready for this magical experience. Once in the balloon, however, due to the fire that keeps the balloon floating, you might not need the jacket during the experience!

      • Know before you go

          • An experienced pilot will pilot the hot air balloon, so if you are afraid, don’t be scared!

        • Link to the tour we went with: https://gyg.me/cdl6Ge8Q

Side note: The crew was ten on 10. They took our pictures and provided information about the landscape and where we were floating at any given time. At the end, the crew offered complimentary non-alcoholic fruit wine to finish it off.

Afternoon

Göreme Open Air Museum - Explore this UNESCO World Heritage site, known for its rock-cut churches and frescoes dating back to the 10th century.

    • Duration: Allow at least two hours to explore the Göreme Open-Air Museum. A good amount of walking is required to see the entire site, and there are some inclines and stairs.

    • History: The Bishop of Kayseri founded it in the fourth century as a center of religious education and thought.

    • There is no need for a tour guide. They have audio service and numbers assigned to each spot, so you can walk around at your own pace and pay for the audio guide instead of a tour. From our experience, the group tours were very crowded, so we paid for the audio tour, walked around on our own time, and took many great pictures!

Lunch - We were at the last leg of our trip (4th week in Turkey). Being an interracial couple (me originally from Turkey and Moiz from India), we tend to balance what we eat during our long trips, so we adventured into an Indian restaurant called Delhi Darbar to savor some chicken biryani. Still, it could have been better, with no spice or taste, as if chicken and rice were cooked separately and then mixed into the plate right before they were served. Overall, Gõreme Center has a few great restaurant options: https://g.co/kgs/ML19aaw, but I will share a few decent ones with you.

Evening

Day 2: Green Tour - Ihlara Valley & Underground City

Morning & Afternoon

This tour starts at 10 am and lasts for 8 hours, so you spend your whole morning and your afternoon with the tour guide, and it is worth it.

Another option is the red tour. The Red Tour is extremely popular, especially if your group includes children or if you need help walking long distances. This is because the stops are closer to Göreme, and there is less walking involved. It also includes lunch and all entry fees, including a visit to the famous Göreme Open Air Museum, which is a must-visit for many travelers in Cappadocia. Other highlights include Uchisar Castle, Monks Valley, Devrent Imagination Valley, and a trip to the Pottery Workshops.

The Green Tour, on the other hand, takes you a little further away from Göreme. After a quick stop at Pigeon Valley Viewpoint, where you can get some photos and incredible views over the valleys and Fairy Chimneys, you will head onto Ihlara Valley, Belisirma Village, Derinkuyu Underground City, and Selime Monastery. Encompassing some of Cappadocia's most unique sights, this tour takes more time, but like the other tours, it also includes lunch and your entry fees. As we like to be active, walk around, and see the famous Selime Monastery, we went with the Green tour instead of The Red tour.

Evening

Sunset drinks and appetizers at Argos

    • Argos has a lot of different sections, and our favorite is Seki Lounge.

    • Seki Lounge is a must-visit in Cappadocia. Its architectural language perfectly incorporates stone and wood, has a high ceiling, and offers a unique view. It is designed for you to spend a beautiful sunset enjoying the views of fairy chimneys from far away and fresh air on its terrace as you lose track of time.

    • Our favorites were the infused gin options with lavender and fig from the region!

Day 3: Culture and Crafts

Morning

  • Avanos Pottery Workshop - Visit the town of Avanos, known for its pottery and ceramics. Try your hand at the potter’s wheel in a local workshop.

  • Brunch at The Old Greek House - Enjoy a quaint and cozy meal in a restored Greek mansion.

Afternoon

  • Wine Tasting at Turasan Winery - One of Cappadocia's finest wines. Sadly, their tasting selection is minimal, but in the evening, we got to taste some of their select list of wines and returned to the winery the next day to buy more of the wines we liked during the tasting at the farewell restaurant mentioned below! I recommend getting a reservation during the busy season, as the week we went was pretty chill, and we did a walk-in, which was fine.

  • Souvenir Shopping in Göreme - I discovered Hattusa, which offers truly unique ceramic art in the heart of Cappadocia. It was founded by an artist born in Ankara in 1957, who turned to ceramic arts upon retirement after a career in teaching and tourism. Disturbed by the prevalence of mass-produced pottery, he revived the ancient art of "Cini" with freehand works, specializing in original Hittite figures. Each piece is meticulously crafted, embodying the rich history of the Hittites. While there's no online store due to each item's uniqueness, they offer worldwide shipping.

  • Sunset ATV Adventure Tour - another highlight of our trip! Get your adrenaline pumping with an ATV tour of Cappadocia's most beautiful valleys, topped off with sunset views from Rose Valley. Amaze yourself with the rock formations of the infamous Love Valley.

Evening

  • Farewell Dinner at Revithia—give your taste buds an incredible journey! Revithia’s mission is to showcase traditional Cappadocian cuisine paired with local wineries to guests from all over the world. This was Moizi’s birthday gift for me, and I was awed! The chef also prepared an amazing red velvet cake that was the cherry on top of our overall experience at this upscale restaurant!

Conclusion
Cappadocia offers an adventure with its otherworldly landscapes, rich history, and vibrant culture. From the awe-inspiring sunrise balloon flights to the exploration of ancient underground cities, this itinerary only scratches the surface of what this unique region offers. Whether navigating the valleys on foot, savoring Anatolian cuisine, or floating above the earth in silence, Cappadocia guarantees memories that will last a lifetime.
